A working group at the University of Tartu Centre for Ethics, has completed an independent analysis, commissioned by the AI Leap Foundation, of the risks associated with the AI Leap educational programme and its AI-based learning application. The analysis describes the risks involved in using AI in education and assesses how AI Leap, the state, schools, research institutions and technology providers can mitigate them.

On 2 October, as part of its 25th anniversary celebrations, the Centre for Ethics of the University of Tartu invites everyone interested to the public international conference “Ethics in a Changing World: New Directions in Ethics, Education and the Age of Artificial Intelligence”.

Nominations for the Estonian Science Communication Awards can be submitted to the Estonian Research Council (ETAG) until 15 September. The competition aims to recognise outstanding and active science communicators as well as innovative initiatives that promote science to wider audiences.

University of Tartu semioticians Andreas Ventsel and Mari-Liis Madisson, along with Junior Research Fellow in Information Resilience Diana Poudel, have developed tools for enhancing critical digital literacy in cooperation with international partners. The practical materials are designed for use in higher education, schools, companies and organisations to support navigating the digital landscape and countering the spread of disinformation.

Estonian researchers have created the AI Barometer where users can compare the responses of language models and assess their proficiency in Estonian. Everyone is welcome to try out the barometer at baromeeter.ai. The researchers aim to collect at least 50,000 comparisons by the end of June.

Doctoral studies offer the chance to become an expert in a narrow field while also developing the skills of making connections and the ability to process information, manage challenging projects, learn from criticism, and, at the same time, manage time efficiently.

On 11 February, the University of Tartu Library hosts the Estonian Doctoral School’s career conference “The value of a doctoral degree on the job market” where top professionals with a doctoral degree and current doctoral students discuss the added value of doctoral studies.
