Class representatives

A class representative is a student representing students of the same year and the same curriculum as him or herself. A class representative voluntarily works for the class students’ benefit, represents them in relevant matters, and ensures that his or her classmates’ time at the Institute of Education is oriented towards pursuing higher education and friendly interaction.

A class representative:

  • is well informed of the organisation of studies; and is a helpful, empathetic, decent and open-minded “people person”;
  • is selected during a discussion by the students in the class (any student in the class is eligible to apply to be a class representative);
  • may elect a substitute class representative if they wish;
  • receives the mandate immediately upon being elected; the mandate expires upon exmatriculation or resignation, after which the students in the class can elect a new representative;
  • serves as a liaison between the institute and his or her fellow students;
  • knows where to turn for help;
  • communicates current and relevant information to the students;
  • communicates feedback from fellow students to the teaching staff during courses to improve the quality of the learning;
  • acts as a link between students of different curricula of the Institute of Education;
  • involves classmates in university or institute events, initiates activities that unite the students and promote student development;
  • may, in agreement with the programme director, participate in internal and external evaluation of the curriculum, attend the Curriculum Programme Council meetings;
  • notices and formulates problems encountered while studying and forwards them for resolution;
  • attends class representatives’ meetings, before which he or she asks the students of the class for input on their positive experiences and issues of concern;
  • informs the class and the institute’s student cooperation coordinator about obstacles to completing his/her assignments and finds a substitute from among the students of the class.

Opportunities of the class representative:

  • be involved in organising institute or class events that appeal to students and in creating traditions;
  • to better unite students of different levels of study;
  • improve the quality of the curricula through continuous communication with the institute, including offering development ideas from the student perspective to support the teaching and learning experience at the institute;
  • create a better connection between the students and the institute;
  • be an opinion leader and make valuable contacts.
