Estonian Journal of Education: Call for Papers

We are inviting submissions for the special issue of the Estonian Journal of Education (Eesti Haridusteaduste Ajakiri), Vol. 13, No. 2, scheduled to be published in November 2025.

The special issue will focus on promoting early mother tongue and second language instruction. The editors of the issue are Professor of Primary Education Krista Uibu from the University of Tartu, Professor of Estonian Language Reili Argus from the Tallinn University and Associate Professor of Estonian as Foreign Language Mare Kitsnik from the Narva College, University of Tartu.

Authors are expected to submit high-quality empirical research articles about early language acquisition and learning, language comprehension and language formation from birth to the end of basic school. More specifically, we invite articles within, but not necessarily limited to, the following topics:

  • early language acquisition;
  • early language environment;
  • early multilingualism;
  • supporting and valuing the home language;
  • Estonian language acquisition and learning at home, in kindergarten and at school;
  • an acquisition and learning of a second language at home, in kindergarten and at school;
  • early teaching of Estonian as a first language;
  • early teaching of Estonian and/or other languages;
  • etc.

The deadlines for the publication are as follows:

  1. Author(s) send the topic of the article(s) accompanied by the abstract in Estonian to Krista Uibu (krista.uibu@ut.ee) by 20 September 2024 at the latest. The abstract of no more than 200 words should summarise the theory of research, the objective(s), the methodology, and the (expected) outcomes of the study.
  2. The editors send confirmation about the acceptance of the manuscripts to the corresponding authors by 1 October 2024.
  3. The authors submit properly formatted manuscripts with a summary in English by 13 January 2025.
  4. The editors inform the authors of the review results by 25 February 2025.
  5. The authors consider the reviewers’ comments and submit the revised manuscripts by 24 March 2025.
  6. Second revision of the manuscripts (if necessary); the editors inform the authors about the second review results by 21 April 2025.
  7. The authors consider the comments in the second-round review and submit the final manuscripts by 12 May 2025.
  8. Language editing of the manuscripts in May–June and August 2025.
  9. Lay-out of the journal at the University of Tartu Press from 10 September 2025.
  10. Date of final publication – 1 November 2025.

Estonian Journal of Education is an international peer-reviewed journal. The journal uses Open Journal Systems (OJS) and is published, in collaboration with the University of Tartu and Tallinn University, by the University of Tartu Press. The journal is indexed in the EBSCO Academic Search Complete database and Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and in Google Scholar.
